Choosing expanded mesh

Your choice of the "right" type of expanded mesh depends on various factors: the envisaged look, functionality, design specifications and constraints and the safety regulations applicable to its intended use. Expanded mesh can be used in a huge number of different applications and so it is only by drawing on Fils' many years of experience and great professional expertise that you can be sure you have made the right choice.

Mesh geometry

The shape of the mesh pattern depends on the shape of the tool used in the expansion process. The shape may be: Square, Diamond or Hexagonal. Each geometry has its own aesthetic features for use in construction and architecture. All the meshes shown on this website can be viewed in their actual size by using our exclusive 1:1 ruler. The shape of the apertures used for industrial applications (such as for filtering) can be chosen to guarantee the required separation type and degree.

The module

Fils offers a vast range mesh modules: small, medium, large and "extra large" (such as the ULTRA LIMITES mesh that can be anything up to 400 mm). You can also request "tailored" modules to meet special needs.

 

Transparency

Transparency is one of the key features of expanded mesh. A mesh with greater apertures lets you create visual effects that allow for glimpses of the underlying surface. Those with smaller apertures can be used to shield structures from the sun. The configuration parameters dictate the different degrees of aperture. Our PRIVACY mesh has the smallest apertures, just 5% open/solid. Our ITALY mesh has the greatest aperture: 54%.

Shading

Expanded mesh panels let you install "smart" solar blinds to reduce the heat generated by the sun's rays. Moveable screens mean you can adjust the shading to suit your personal needs at different times of the day. This makes for savings in electricity (air conditioning), as well as more comfortable conditions.

Aeration

The mesh aperture also depends on your needs for aeration and ventilation, such as in car-parks and utility rooms. This was the case for the covered car-park at the new Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo, where framed panels of Academy expanded mesh have been used.

Protective materials and finishes

Aluminium is a favourite material for architectural applications. Carbon steel is used where strength is a prime factor, such as walkways. The choice of which thickness to use depends on the intended use and the loads it is expected to support. Coloured, protective finishes are indispensable to guarantee long life.
